"Frozen pipe" days off and sledging on plastic bags down your road. Well blame it on Global warning or whatever you like but you can relive them just a short plane ride away here at the Carnegie Alpenrose. Tucked away up a mountain road, the Carnegie Alpenrose spends it's winter season nestled in the snow covered mountains.

There's just something about snow that just whisks you back to those care free days. Whether it be whizzing down a hill on a sledge or just crunching through fresh snow and sinking knee seep into the white stuff. From the doorstep the walk to the top of the sledge run may be a bit of a puff but you will have the biggest grin on your face by the time you get back down! Gone are the days of Trays and Plastic sacks; in Bavaria every family owns a well loved wooden Sledge and weekends are spent on beautifully pisted tracks to the mountains huts where hot chocolate and Mulled wine give you a quick energy boost before your spectacular speedy descent. Some of these sledging routes are up to 4km long so you really get your walks worth!

If you prefer a calmer more tranquil way to enjoy the snow then test out your architectural skills on an igloo building course. Don your snow shoes and head out into the backcountry to find the best snow and then get to grips with this ancient shelter building skill. Alternatively, why not learn some true backcountry skills on a Mountain skills day. You will learn about the snowpack, how to build a variety of emergency shelters, how to avoid avalanches and how to react if you get caught out. Using transceivers, probe, ice axes and shovels in a safe and secure environment with experienced mountaineers you will soon feel like Mont Blanc is within reach.

For those who enjoy a good walk in the hills but want to experience a winter version, snow-shoeing is a great way to get around the mountains. Gone are the days of tennis rackets tied to your feet! These lightweight plastic shoes are strapped onto your walking boots and aided by poles, away you go.

All of these non skiing snow based activities are available with My Peak Potential in the Bavarian Alps, Southern Germany. Dave Bunting reported in that all team members are well and in great spirits.

Tengboche is the site of an important Buddhist monastery, home to around 60 monks, and is also famous because of its spectacular and unique location offering the first clear views of Mt. Everest at 8848m. From here the team will also look out on some of the other world's highest mountains including Ama Dablam [6,812m], Nuptse [7,855m] and Lhotse [8,516m]. The ice walls of these mountains dominate the landscape where avalanches can frequently be heard rumbling high up the glaciers.

Tomorrow the team will be moving up to Pheriche at 4200m where they'll spend another day acclimatizing and by doing a short local hike. In Pheriche they also plan to visit the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) who have established a clinic there. The clinic is staffed by volunteer Doctors from all countries who meet with climbing and trekking expeditions to treat and offer advice on altitude and other mountaineering health issues.

Waiting to take off for Lukla
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395043413373420450" style="WIDTH: 200px; A team of Leeds Metropolitan University staff and students are embarking on a three week expedition which is being led by the University’s Outdoor partners My Peak Potential Ltd. Expedition leader and Director of training for My Peak Potential, Dave Bunting MBE, worked closely with Leeds Met on a Military expedition to Everest’s West Ridge which he led in 2006. He and his deputy Richie Painting, arrived in Kathmandu on Weds last week as the advance party. One of the most important roles has been visiting the Charity which the Expedition team is helping; the Self Help Group for Cerebral Palsy. Here they met Bimal who is heading up the project they are helping with. They viewed the area that the team will be helping to clear and chatted about the project ahead.

Once the team arrives in Kathmandu they will settle into their hotel and then start work the following morning at the Self Help Group Centre. Here they will present the Group with a cheque raised by the team through a variety of fundraising projects over the last year. When given the news about the fundraising the team had done, Bimal said “I can't believe it !!! you made me cry .... I see blank but thankful eyes of our special children.. we will use best of this contribution.”

They will also be helping the Group with various building projects at the centre and meeting some of the children and families that use this valuable resource.
It is then onto the next stage, a trek to Everest Base Camp. Where they will experience the rarified air of this high altitude region and stunning scenery where they will be able to see some of the world’s largest mountains and meet the wonderful people that live in this harsh but beautiful place!
Please keep posted for the next installment!

My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-83527186483732715622009-10-08T05:25:00.000-07:002009-10-08T07:35:01.302-07:00The Original and the best Christmas MarketsEvery year in the sleepy mountain village of Bad Hindelang in the Bavarian Allgau, just a short drive from our Alpine Lodge the Carnegie Alpenrose, they hold the most beautiful Christmas Market.

With over 200,000 Christmas lights strung through the narrow streets of the town the event is probably the most Christmassy thing you have ever seen!

The event is opened with a magical Fairytale Christmas parade of Angels, Elves, Snow Queens, and many more - You will be transported into an enchanting, snowy winter wonderland.
Wander the maze of streets lined with delicious food stalls with a warming mug of Glühwein (mulled wine). The group gathered in the Yorkshire Dales village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale to attempt the 24 mile mixed terrain route best known as the Yorkshire 3 Peaks.

The trek created an opportunity to raise public awareness regarding the expedition, and in addition provided the team a chance to demonstrate the positive effects of the various physical conditioning programmes in which they have been involved.

With the weather being fully supportive from the outset, many of us were denied the opportunity to field test our various pieces of newly purchased equipment. Although remaining slightly disappointed that the conditions fell short of the desired -20 degree coat-testing-environment, the vast majority of the trekkers on the route were in fabulous spirits, and helped to create a fantastic start to the day.

Pen-y-Ghent was the first obstacle the team hit, but it failed to faze the expedition members and offered the first magnificent views of the day. A long walk followed from the summit, across stone walls, cattle grids and bogs, the latter of which firmly christened any new boots in the party.

The climb towards Wernside was an extended one, but relatively gentle compared to the previous peak. The visibility on the day provided brilliant views throughout, but still didn’t fully prepare us for the sight of the Dales from the top of our second peak. With summit photo number 2 completed, we set out for the final climb up Ingleborough. Although the author’s legs had already been fully tested, the prodigious achievement of completing the 3 Peaks challenge, and the commendable determination of the team helped to keep everyone going forwards, with smiles on their faces

The team aptly, if crudely nicknamed the steps which composed the final climb of the day, but a cracking leg burner and some soggy base layers later, the whole team had made it to their third Yorkshire Peak of the day. The final walk back was eventful, but neither the grints nor the local cows which littered the path could prevent every team member returning unscathed (relatively).

We were asked to identify the top five leadership qualities that we had observed in others, giving specific examples of when they had seen these in practice. The range of qualities identified was both comprehensive and enlightening, ranging from the ability to remain calm under pressure, to providing vision and direction to a team.
The tasks we were presented with provided ample opportunity to put these 'ideal' leadership skills to work. The protective environment of the Carnegie Alpenrose, alongside the fantastic support of the My Peak Potential team, provided the perfect backdrop for this. A key aim was to allow individuals the opportunity to reflect on how they might take what they had learned and observed back to their working environment. A highlight for me was the personal support shown across the group throughout each task or activity. As our students graduate this week they experience a different but equally poignant sense of community spirit. It was a privilege to be a part of this residential and I hope our graduating students will embrace many opportunities following receipt of their awards.

The trip was part of the Leadership and Management programme and proved to be an excellent finale to the group experience of the programme. The surroundings of Bavaria proved uplifting, with the striking Alpine scenes inspirational and each day presenting another aspect of natural beauty to wonder at. We were welcomed warmly by the staff of My Peak Potential, the University partner operating the Alpenrose facility and throughout the whole experience their friendly and gentle support proved invaluable in coaching us through fairly challenging tasks.

Though based in different areas of the University we soon formed a strong and supportive team, reducing the potential anxiety of the challenges of the experience greatly and it is this that must be the most important learning point of the trip for me. We all have tough jobs to do but with the considerate support of colleagues the burden is shared, the outcomes improved and the experience positive. The tasks we undertook all had a physical aspect and this made the excellent cooking of the chef Herbert Muller even more inviting, with his traditional dishes proving supremely wholesome and universally loved by the group!

Lawrence Bellamy - Faculty of Business and Law
My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-66883285920045945342009-06-30T06:40:00.000-07:002009-06-30T07:21:42.629-07:00Escape the heat waveWith a Met Office heat wave warning out for the UK, what better time than right now to plan a get away from all the stickiness to the fresh, crisp air and open spaces of the mountains!

If you can’t open enough windows in the office and you are fed up of breathing in the recycled air from the air conditioning unit in the corner, then what you need is some of Europe’s cleanest air combined with the superb Alpine climate of the Bavarian mountains.
Our Alpine lodge is nestled into the foothills at a fresh 934m’s above sea level. The evening went without a hitch, save for the confusion of the compere's heads or tails game which saw a few bemused party goers standing around with their hands planted on their heads or holding their backsides wondering if they were still in the game.

Around 350 guests, including Leeds United goalkeeper Casper Ankergren, British mountaineer Alan Hinkes, GB Kayak canoe champion Claire O'Hara and Leeds Carnegie's Steve Nance and Andy Key turned up to support the expedition. They were greeted by a champagne reception before sitting down to a delicious four course meal.

Expedition leader Dave Bunting introduced the evening followed by a short film about the community project they are supporting, Self Help Group for Cerebral Palsy (SGCP ). Dave said "As well as improving levels of fitness for their trek to Everest Base Camp in October 2009, the team has to meet an immense challenge on the fundraising front to make this Expedition a success and to support the SGCP. The success of Saturday night brings us another step closer to achieving the team's objectives and we are looking forward to the next events to maintain this momentum."

Following the meal, the compere for the evening, Frank Hanson, came into his own and was auctioneer supreme, getting people to reach deep into their pockets for some great prizes such as a holiday for 6 in a Norwegian Log Cabin, a weekend sailing trip and a day with the GB bobsleigh team culminating in a run down the St Moritz course! However, the prize everyone had their eyes on though was a place on the team to Basecamp. This was snapped up quickly and for a handsome figure. The team is now one person stronger. My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-45696210100895975712009-05-25T06:18:00.000-07:002009-06-11T09:45:02.588-07:00International Rugby star prepares for Everest with My Peak Potential This weekend saw Josh Lewsey, World cup winning International rugby player, along with best mate Captain Keith Reesby, a serving Army helicopter pilot, start their preparation to climb Mount Everest next Apr-May. The 3 day programme with My Peak Potential was based around establishing a starting point for the training from a climbing/mountaineering perspective.
Josh Lewsey’s long and successful career in both national and international rugby has kept him mainly at sea level with his feet firmly on a rugby pitch. He and Keith recently trekked to K2’s base camp which has given them both a taste of how the altitude might affect them. However their goal of reaching the roof of the world is going to be no mean feat and the next year will see them working hard to fully prepare themselves for what they will encounter during their push for the summit of Everest.

John Doyle and Dave Bunting of My Peak Potential, who between them have over 15 Himalayan Expeditions under their belts, will be putting both Josh and Keith through their paces in the next year. Their extensive knowledge and experience in both leading and climbing at altitude allows them to pass on all the necessary skills and preparation needed to give Josh and Keith the best chance of making it to the top of Everest next year. As well as learning how to use their crampons, ice axes and ropes effectively, they will also be learning a lot about what it takes both physically and mentally to get themselves up nearly three and a half kilometers of snow and ice.
John Doyle has successfully summited both the 3rd and 11th highest peaks in the world without supplementary oxygen and Dave Bunting recently led and climbed on an expedition attempting Everest’s summit via it’s notoriously dangerous and rarely attempted West Ridge route. John Doyle was also Climbing Leader on this expedition which although cut short due to avalanche conditions high up on the mountain, was hailed as a great success with all 20 climbing members reaching the high camp at 7600m.

Josh and Keith’s training started in earnest this weekend by way of a gentle introduction and familiarisation to harnesses and ropes. They were kitted up and tied in ready to descend the Gorge that runs behind My Peak Potential’s Alpine Training centre in Bavaria. With two waterfalls, zip wires and Tyrolean traverses to cross, this course of rope work allows people to acquaint themselves with knots, ropes and other climbing equipment in a controlled environment. Happy with their kit and eager to get to grips with the more advanced mountain gear, they were then taken up to the snowline on the mountains above the lodge to try on crampons and practice with ascending techniques. With just enough snow left in this part of the Alps to pull it off, the weather held just long enough to give them a small taste of what would be required of them. All that was missing was the exposure and altitude.

The next day My Peak Potential took Josh and Keith to a popular Klettersteig in Austria where they made a 500ft ascent of a cliff face next to a huge waterfall. Klettersteig is a very popular activity in this part of the Alps. Also known as Via Ferrata in other Alpine regions, it is a method of climbing and traversing the mountains using fixed metal ropes, bridges and ladders. You are clipped onto the wires and so it is a relatively safe method of reaching the parts of the mountains usually reserved for mountaineers and goats! Through his rugby, Josh is a very fit and athletic person and as the route progressed so did Josh’s technique. By the time he topped out an hour and a bit later he sighted it as “one of the best things I have ever done!” It also made him acutely aware of the need for high quality training in the skill sets needed to climb effectively and, more importantly at altitude, efficiently!

The weekend was a great success and plans have been made for the next stages of training including a 7-9 day high alpine programme. Both Josh and Keith are also enlisting the help of My Peak Potential’s partners, Leeds Metropolitan University in the very near future to gain crucial assistance and advice on physical and nutritional preparation for their climb. The University’s research and assistance on the Everest West Ridge Expedition was sighted as a very strong factor in the team’s outstanding performance on the mountain and so will offer the friends the best chance of making their dream to stand on top of the world a very real one.

“The first step! Thanks so much - the best outdoor experience I’ve had. See you again soon” Josh Lewsey

“What an amazing weekend! Thanks so much for your hospitality and training which will hopefully set the foundations for Everest. See you again in August” – Capt. The fundamental values and core principles that first attracted me to the medical profession, that are so ingrained and have been subconsciously honed over the years, are what this course embodies.

Teamwork, problem solving, mental and physical challenge, self awareness and communication skills are all components of leadership that are so fundamental to our profession. The team will be aiming to reach Everest base camp as well as volunteering with a community project at a school for children with cerebral palsy, for which the team are aiming to raise £20,000.

The week combined briefings, mountain skills training, snow shoeing and that all important team bonding, in perfect clear blue skies which resulted in certain team members returning home with an unexpected lobster appearance.

Having been unable to attend the first training meet in North Wales I was meeting some of the team members for the first time. From the outset I was struck by what a friendly, motivated and diverse group of people have been put together for this ambitious project.

Unlike many commercial trekking expeditions where you simply turn up at the airport, this one is unique in that each team member has a specific area of responsibility from fundraising to coordinating the physical preparation. This results in the team developing personally and also learning vast amounts about expedition planning which contributes to a more rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Coming from a sporting background I have always enjoyed being part of a team and all the camaraderie and friendships that come along with having that collective identity. Some of the staff who run the centre are ex-army and there were stories of alarming physical activities. Arrival at the Alpenrose soon dispelled that. The accommodation and food were first class and the staff friendly and supportive, facilitating not just the activities but the social side as well. Some are volunteers because they believe in what the centre stands for - personal development, new experiences, pushing boundaries. Their enthusiasm was infectious.

The stunning scenery was a perfect backdrop to the activities - Nordic skiing, snowshoe walking and team building - involving ropes and wires across gorges - the most rewarding as it needed cooperation, trust, and teamwork. These qualities, on a much larger scale, were seen in two awe-inspiring evening presentations by Dave Bunting, who led the 2006 expedition up Everest's notorious west face and Dee Caffari, the first woman to sail single-handed round the world in both directions. It is possible to question the purpose of enterprises like these but impossible not to admire the sheer courage, drive, organisation and determination to carry them through.

Kevin Anderson Bibliographic Services Librarian Faculty of Innovation North - Libraries and Learning ServicesMy Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-445534146410265682009-03-31T06:12:00.000-07:002009-03-31T06:19:48.020-07:00Festival of Partnerships for Students Prize winnerAfter working on various Regional University Network events throughout the Festival of Partnerships for Students I was thrilled to be one of the chosen few to find 'My Peak Potential'. The briefing in Leeds gave us an insight to what could be expected but on arriving at the lodge in the Southern Alps of Germany, nothing quite prepared me for the spectacular location and scenery. Day one saw our team Nordic skiing, day two snowshoeing and day three was the much kept secret activities in the gorge; a mix of activities which enabled us all to challenge ourselves both physically and mentally.and have some fun along the way.

The coaches were fantastic and made us all feel at ease with each task we faced - going blind folded down a zip wire across a river is certainly something I have never experienced before! Lucky enough to be one of the chosen few drawn out of the hat I found myself Nordic walking, skiing and climbing down a gorge during the three day trip as part of a diverse group, made up of students and staff from across the university. We listened to inspiring talks from Dee Caffari who sailed solo around the world in both directions and Dave Bunting who led the British team up Mount Everest via the West Ridge.

The instructors were brilliant. They taught us the skills needed to participate in the challenges so we felt safe and comfortable. I also loved listening to the fascinating facts about the local countryside. It was an amazing experience. We had beautiful weather, spectacular scenery, comfortable accommodation and scrumptious Bavarian cakes. At times challenging, it was really enjoyable and I even made some new friends. I have returned feeling enthused and rejuvenated with just a few sore blisters on my feet. The motto of the weekend for me had to be: "pain is temporary, quitting is forever!"
My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-17794737478324289152009-03-25T04:29:00.000-07:002009-03-25T04:49:48.236-07:00Winners in BavariaLast week saw a group of 19 students and staff, winners in the Leeds Metropolitan University Festival of Partnerships for Students, arrive at the Carnegie Alpenrose for a week of fun and personal development in the mountains. When they received the news that they were to fly out to Bavaria for a week of snow and sunshine, few of them really knew what to expect.

Many groups arrive here questioning themselves deeply, will I be fit enough; is it going to be scary; am I capable? Well, so far...everyone who has visited us on a teambuilding or leadership programme has accomplished the challenges on offer; some against all expectations of themselves. Our trainers are some of the most highly qualified and experienced outdoor specialists and safety remains their main focus; fun a close second! This is nicely expressed below by one of the students in the group.

From all your Gorge group, we wish we were in the Gorge every day. Not once did we feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Thank you for making our first day at the Alpenrose so great. Becki Griffiths

Although this programme was not essentially about learning new skills or teambuilding (these students came from many different faculties across the University) it was still designed to be a very powerful experience, benefitting the individual both personally and professionally.

Reasonably new to the industry myself, I have been blown away by the effects of outdoor activities on individuals. The achievements in getting yourself and your team mates down through the “Gorge experience” or of learning a new skill such as Nordic skiing are a huge boost to self confidence and self belief which in turn can boost creativity, problem solving and develop talent and potential. You are also bonding with people who are sharing the same experiences as you and in doing so you are learning to place trust and have confidence in others as well as yourself.

Experiencing something outside of your normal routine can also have huge psychological benefits and give you that nudge you need to realise dreams and aspirations that you thought were beyond your boundaries. Please see our “Be your Best“ web page for more benefits of outdoor activities.

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered you will never grow.”> Ronald E Osborn

This group arrived in the main as individuals but left as a group of friends who had shared some great experiences. There was a lot of laughter as well as a few tears of anticipation but I think the testimonials they left us sum up the end product......

“Had a brilliant time and would like to thank all the staff involved. I feel I have achieved something I would not have done otherwise, thanks" Karen Smith

“Thanks to everyone involved in making the last few days so amazing. I’ve never been on a trip like this but I definitely will be doing something like this again....” Chris Jones

“The time spent with My Peak Potential has been both exciting and exhilarating. The activities are so rewarding and the team leaders are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Thank you 4 the opportunity” Sam Dixon

My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-84613924669891470102009-03-18T08:38:00.000-07:002009-03-19T08:11:56.569-07:00Leadership and Karaoke on the high seasWe currently have Dee Caffari, World class record breaking solo yachtswoman, staying with us at the Carnegie Alpenrose. After very recently returning from her third around the world challenge where she was taking part in the Vendee Globe race, she is enjoying a well deserved break as well as easing herself back into some land-based exercise.

At sea Dee was very much confined to the boundaries of her 60ft yacht. Although controlling a boat of this class is extremely strenuous work, it is mainly her arms that bore the brunt of this work. Dee describes her physical appearance on return to land as similar to that of the well loved seadog Popeye! However there was no spinach in sight, just days and days of freeze dried rations! My Peak Potential’s John Doyle has been taking her on early morning runs to get those land legs back up to full speed whilst Herbie, our chef, has been making sure she gets her greens! With a combination of gentle runs in the foothills, Nordic skiing, Ski-touring and snow-showing each day Dee will soon be back up to peak fitness and the next challenge in front of her, the Around Britain and Ireland Record. Is there no stopping this woman?

Dee’s stay with us has also coincided with a group of students who are with us as part of a prize they received from their student festival. On the first evening of their stay they listened to our very own Dave Bunting present his Everest West Ridge expedition story and on evening two Dee kindly offered an impromptu account of her own experiences of her record-breaking world challenges.

Having heard Dave’s inspirational story a few times now, I was really looking forward to finding out all about another inspiring adventure. With questions reeling around my head of how you cope with the loneliness, what happens if your injure yourself and the nearest person to you is actually on the international space station above you (This is true of one point on the route, and just happened to coincide with Dee’s birthday this year!), I made myself comfy in the lecture room.
The statistics are pretty impressive and I think Dee herself is just coming to terms with them. Apparently only four people have ever circumnavigated the world in both directions, and only one of these four is a woman. That woman is Dee! She seemingly surprises herself with this statistic and follows it up with a congratulatory....”Get in!”

Dee is an extremely personable woman and so it is even more fascinating that she has chosen to sail around the world twice, solo. I have always imagined it to be the theatre of slightly introverted and steely characters; this is the antithesis of Dee’s nature. Dee’s sunny personality captivates her audience. She describes the horror of hearing the fate of other sailors in the fleet. How news of dismastings and capsizes unnerve her in the southern oceans. How the lack of sleep, the waves as high as a three storey house and the drifting Icebergs (a very real threat to a boat made from Carbon fibre) are all elements of the journey she battles with alone each day.

Dee’s 60 ft yacht Aviva, became her ally and confidant on her 3 month journey.
With the nearest person hundreds of miles away, you need some company. They were in this race together so many conversations would be had between the two of them, well...in one direction, but none the less; Aviva was always consulted on the next move!

Music appeared to be another savoir from the loneliness of this solo race. With nothing but the sound of three storey waves crashing into your hull, it provided a great distraction for the mind. Dee states that her Karaoke skills were much improved on her return!

The most interesting part of this story to us as a leadership training facility is the way Dee coped with leading herself and her 60ft Yacht across hundreds of thousands of kilometres of forbidding seas. She had an amazing team supporting her from dry land, but if something breaks or goes wrong, the decision making is ultimately up to her. How to manage herself, her time, her eating, her sleeping is all down to Dee. She is her own mechanic, own chef, own doctor, own manager, own counsellor and own companion.

As an ex student of Leeds Metropolitan University she worked closely with them on the physiological and psychological aspects of her trip. By analysing diaries she kept on her last trip against the prevailing winds, she was able to recognise patterns of behaviour fairly quickly and react accordingly. She uses one example, which although a seemingly obvious reaction in children, we rarely recognise in ourselves as adults. She noted that when her emotions and stress were running high and her ability to cope with them was low, it was because she either needed a sleep or something to eat. Things are always so much easier with a little shut eye and a full tummy. Try it next time!

Thank you very much Dee for your presentation and a very big congratulations on your record –breaking double and your 6th place in the Vendee!
Dee is available for motivational and after dinner speaking.
Bespoke outdoor leadership and management development programmes are a powerful and effective way to develop teams and managers, providing them with the necessary skills to cope with difficult times.

With the toughest recession for a generation upon us and more and more pressure being put on managers to run their teams more efficiently and effectively; strong leadership and solid teamwork are essential to a company’s survival.

Providing leadership and management training will enable your managers to respond to and withstand the changeable and competitive climate they are working in. The right development programme will make them more effective, help them deal with stress and enable them to increase productivity, allowing the company to reap the benefits in both the short and long term.
One of the most effective methods for ensuring that skills learnt on Management Development courses are transferable back into the workplace is to allow people to practise these skills first hand. The results are more powerful, longer lasting and deeper rooted than those learnt in a classroom. The Outdoors is a unique leaning environment providing more impact and credibility than the classroom with participants experiencing and reacting to the real thing.

This 24 hour challenge seems very involved and also quite intriguing; it seems I will be embracing my cognitive, physical and emotional dimensions!! Two models attributed to Karl Ronke, introduced me to a tool for creating the right balance of challenges to optimise our learning experience. Whilst new to me, the concepts are very straight forward. The first is ‘Challenge by Choice’, where we choose how hard to push ourselves and understand we need to be stretched to maximise our development. The second is ‘Comfort, Stretch, Panic’, best pictured as three concentric circles. In the centre is our Comfort Zone, next comes the Stretch Zone and the outside ring is the Panic Zone.

The Comfort Zone is what we are used to and enjoy doing. I spent a lot of the weekend here, aided by the beautiful surroundings, excellent staff and the safe environment they created. The Stretch Zone is where the learning happens. Abseiling blindfolded while the whole group is mute, stretched me to evaluate my every movement and remember everything I had been taught. The Panic Zone is to be avoided, you are not focused or learning. Luckily, my only foray into Panic was when it was time to go!

My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905443699236371903.post-26349573158145532292008-11-13T02:57:00.000-08:002008-12-05T05:13:43.475-08:00How Does Outdoor Education Add ValueOutdoor activities, by combining cerebral, physical, and emotional dimensions, offer the opportunity to discover the behaviour patterns and interpersonal skills of how people behave, interact, and achieve, regardless of whether they are abseiling or undertaking a work role. This is the key to the effective use of the outdoors. First designing a course that is strong in isomorphs - the similarity between behaviours at work and in the outdoors – and then enabling participants to discover this relevance and transfer their learning back to the workplace. This has been described as isomorphic transfer – the gaining of knowledge and skills in one environment that can be transferred to another.

So how do outdoor activities that appear unrelated to work activities improve performance at work?

Effective learning takes place when an individual puts an idea into practice. That practical experience tests the original idea, the individual can reflect upon the results achieved - modify the idea as necessary - and try again. The outdoors is a superb environment in which to do this because it is closer to reality than most forms of training as participants behave normally and cannot role-play due to the unfamiliarity of the setting. For most people it takes them out of their comfort zone, which is necessary to develop and learn. Learning occurs when we move briefly into stretch, try new things, and return to comfort to reflect upon the experience and assess what we have learned. Soon what was in stretch becomes comfortable, our comfort zone expands, and we become more capable. My Peak Potential’s experience of controlling people’s exposure to risk in the outdoors ensures that participants do not spend time in their panic zone as that causes stress and significantly hinders performance and learning.

Not only does the outdoors provide a novel, non-contextual environment for learning but also because tasks are unrelated to work activities and are relatively simple they expose the processes by which individuals perform and achieve. Outdoor activities offer an emotional dimension that parallels real life and presents a full learning experience. The physical, emotional, and cognitive nature of the activities helps by breaking down psychological barriers that can inhibit participation and learning. The immediacy and nature of the tasks involving these three domains requires full participation, the taking of decisive action, and heightens the experience. So gaining greater commitment from the participants and encouraging longer retention of the learning outcomes.
The safety of participants must be of the highest priority and although outdoor activities have apparent danger, in reality the danger is minimized and mitigated.

The outcome of well structured outdoor programmes is one of the individual experiencing strong emotions in a safe environment. This is important because it exposes the underpinning processes (the behaviour patterns and interpersonal skills) of how people relate to others. In taking what they perceive as risk, whilst being challenged and supported, participants can explore and understand their own limitations, how they react to others and how that affects their behaviour. Limitations can then be placed in context and practical steps planned to overcome them.
[1] Teigen KH., 1994. In 1907 Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement with the aim of getting young people out of the towns and into the fresh air in order to “Stiffen the slouching slum-dweller and sharpen the lazy schoolboy”. In 1940 Kurt Hahn founded Outward Bound after noting that older sailors more likely to survive sinking during WWII. He produced a programme that gave young sailors new experiences which helped them to realise and understand their own potential and limitations and improve survivability. At about the same time the War Office Selection Board used simple exercises in the outdoors to test, develop and appoint leaders in the Army which focused on leadership, team work and problem solving. From about the 1960’s onwards it gathered momentum and began to take shape and training using the outdoors is now commonplace throughout many organisations.

From http://www.my-peakpotential.com/My Peak Potentialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224555405606299954noreply@blogger.com0
